Zika virus disease is caused by a mosquito-borne virus first identified in the Zika Forest of Uganda in 1947. In 2015, a significant outbreak impacted regions in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The virus remains present in many parts of the world and continues to pose a public health concern. Although symptoms of Zika virus disease are generally mild, infection during pregnancy has been associated with severe health complications in newborns.
