Chikungunya is a viral illness transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, causing fever and severe joint pain. It shares symptoms with dengue, leading to potential misdiagnosis in areas where dengue is common. Identified in nearly 40 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas, chikungunya has circulated in the Pacific Region since 2011. While these mosquitoes are not found in Aotearoa New Zealand, chikungunya should be considered in travelers returning from affected areas. These mosquitoes are day biters that thrive around homes, and over half the world’s population lives within the range of Aedes aegypti, posing a significant risk for arboviral diseases.
